If you are entering many equations, you may find it convenient to have an "Insert Equation" button right on the toolbar. Putting an equation button on the tool bar In-place editing is the default, but it is possible to make window editing the default.

To exit and return to your Word document you may choose File/Exit and Return to ( DocumentName) to update the Word document but remain in the equation editor you may choose File/Update.This is much easier for entering equations.
